Rough & Ready Lumber Co. receives FSC Chain-of-Custody
Certification
CAVE JUNCTION, Oregon (March 30, 2009) – Rough &
Ready Lumber Co. announced today that the 87-year-old wood products company is
now certified to standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which
assures customers that its FSC products come from FSC well-managed
forests—forests that are grown and harvested in an environmentally and
socially responsible manner.
Such certification, the owners say, should open up new
opportunities in the growing “green building” market, where demand is
growing for certified lumber.
The move builds on the company’s long-term commitment
to environmental performance. From renewable power
production in 2008 to certified green lumber in 2009,
family
-owned Rough
& Ready Lumber Co. has stayed in business by adapting to modern challenges
and opportunities while maintaining its core strengths.
In early 2008, at the beginning of the current economic downturn, the
third-generation owners built an $8 million facility that produces renewable
power while drying lumber using forest biomass and wood waste.
Company managers demonstrated their agility again recently by
seeking acknowledgement for their conservation-minded practices.
On March 27, they received notice from third-party certifier Scientific
Certification Systems, Inc. showing compliance with FSC’s rigorous,
international environmental
standards. FSC Chain-of-Custody
Certification assures that wood products come from forests that are managed in
ways that protect water, soil and wildlife while supporting forest workers and
the economic and social fabric of rural community life.
“In this challenging economy we’re especially glad
to have something positive to focus on,”
Link
said.
Jennifer added, “We have seen a lot of interest in FSC products,
particularly in connection with public works projects.
And in this age of energy conservation we are all more conscious of the
benefits of using local building materials. This
fits well with Rough & Ready’s long practice of providing quality lumber
to markets on the West Coast.”
The Krauss

the

since the late
1800’s and has had an unbroken commitment to the forest and the local
community, supporting protection of special wild places, old growth reserves and
careful management of working forests.
The Phillippis participate in a broad spectrum of
associations and boards. Jennifer
was recently appointed to serve a second term as a member of the Oregon State
Board of Forestry. She said “The
Board of Forestry’s efforts to integrate the environmental, social
and economic values of the forest are consistent with my
family
's long-held
beliefs and practices.” Jennifer
also serves on the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, the Josephine County
Four-Way Community Foundation and is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce.
